A1 campaign group launched

 A1 campaign group launched

The A1 Campaign Group was formally launched this week with its first meeting in Berwick-upon-Tweed. It was co-chaired by Anne-Marie Trevelyan, the Conservative PPC for Berwick Constituency. Anne-Marie said “I have launched this Action Group because it is clear to me that this is one of the most pressing issues for North Northumberland and the Borders. The A1 is – or should be – the main road from Newcastle to Edinburgh. Instead of a decent road, we still have an under-funded, mostly single track road on which freight traffic is restricted to 40 mph, and serious and fatal accidents still occur all too frequently.”

The cross-border, cross-party organisation met at the Guild Hall in Berwick with representatives from Scottish Borders Council, Northumberland County Council, Berwick Town Council, transport groups, community councils, the fire service, civic societies together with politicians and campaigners who have an interest in this important issue.

The sole purpose of the Group is to campaign for improvements to the A1 to achieve dual carriageway from Morpeth to Torness.
